Welcome to my Lost Wax Pendant and Charm Carving workshop! Nestled in the leafy Eastern suburbs of Melbourne (3105, VIC), we will dive into fun and playful stuff in my colourful jewellery making studio.

Whether you're a complete beginner or wanting to expand your wax carving skill set, you'll get hands-on experience carving and building a pendant or a few small charms in jewellers wax (for lost wax casting).

This course is suitable for those who have already carved wax (eg. wax carved rings) and wish to expand their existing skill set and capabilities!

Carve a few basic pendants and/or charms, incorporating organic build up, wax detailing and wax texturing. Learn how to create pendant bails using wax wire, or integrated bails.

See photos for charm/pendant ideas. These charms will all be in my student "inspo" box, for you to peruse on your arrival.

Your charms will be sent offsite to be cast in sterling silver! Casting fees and metal costs are estimated at the end of class, and are not included in the course fee.

You will return two weeks later to finish and polish your charms/pendants.

Please reach out if you are unsure whether your design is permitted. Students can reasonably make 2 - 3 items in this course (maybe more, depending on experience)!

Important note: This class is not for intermediate, advanced or highly detailed technical sculptural wax carving. This course does not involve the use of gemstones, any gemstone setting techniques, any setting directly in metal, any casting and assembly, or any fabrication/soldering.

I look forward to welcoming you!

Much Love,

Dahna

Prerequisites

Open to complete beginners. Must be 18+ to enrol. This course is also suitable for those who already have wax carving experience (eg. wax carved rings) and wish to expand their wax carving skill set.

Course Details

The course is divided into two separate sessions. Classes start at 10am. In the first class (3 hours), we'll carve your charms/pendants which will be transformed into silver via the lost wax investment casting process afterwards (offsite). In the final session two weeks later (2 hours), you'll polish your work using professional methods. The classes will still run as scheduled, even if there's only one student - so you're guaranteed a highly personalised guidance throughout. Maximum of 3 students per class!

Schedule & Structure

Class 1: Wax Carving - 10am - 1pm (3 hours), includes coffee/tea and refreshments.
Class 2: Cleaning and Polishing - 10am - 12pm (2 hours), includes coffee/tea and refreshments.
Please bring your own ideas, sketches, or inspirational photos to discuss at our first class. Alternatively, reach out in advance with your ideas to ensure they are achievable!
Please let Dahna know if you have any allergies.

Tools List

You will be working on fully equipped jeweller's benches using professional processes and tools. All necessary equipment, safety glasses, consumables, and carving waxes are provided onsite for use in the studio. Please bring an apron if you choose to remain dust-free, and reading glasses if necessary!

Fees & Payment

The total course fee is $395 which is due in full at the time of booking.

Please refer to the Workshop FAQ's/policies for cancellation/refund/rescheduling details.

This course fee does not include the metal or casting costs. An estimate of these costs will be given at the end of the first class (see note below on estimated fees). The amount for materials is charged at absolute cost price, and is payable via direct bank transfer in advance of the second class.

The total estimated cost to produce one small pendant/charm in silver ranges between $15 - $20 (for regular designs), so if you manage to make 4 charms you'll be up for $60 - $80 total. Costs are calculated on metal weight and casting fees, and are charged at absolute cost price to students.

Studio Policies & Safety

Safety is top priority. Students must adhere to all safety procedures: closed-toe shoes, long hair tied up, no loose clothing or scarves. Clean safety glasses and new disposable masks will be provided for you to wear. Please read through the studio policies carefully prior to attending your classes - these policies are sent to you immediately after the class has been purchased. If you're unwell, please reschedule your class to another weekday. Full terms and conditions for workshops and policies can be found on our website. Studio policies are sent via email after a class has been purchased. Please review these policies prior to attending class.

After Course Completion

After course completion, you will receive a PDF containing a list of tools and consumables used in class, as well as instructions for carving and finishing a basic pendant. You will also have access to one-time supplier discounts with participating local suppliers. You'll also receive details of a recommended casting company. This information is sent via email to your provided email address after the final session. Please provide your email address at the checkout.
